The European Commission invokes the rule of law only to blackmail Hungary

Hungarian Justice Minister Judit Varga said on Tuesday in a videoconference by EU foreign ministers that applying “double standards” regarding the rule of law is “unacceptable,” MTI said according to Agerpres.

According to the Hungarian minister, the European Commission applies different standards regarding the procedure for appointing media authorities. Thus, he exemplified, in the case of Hungary, a qualified majority of deputies is required to make the appointments, while in Belgium and Denmark the government appoints these officials directly.

Furthermore, the Observatory on Media Pluralism, co-financed by the European Union, speaks only of problems in Hungary, pretending not to see the problems linked to the monopolization of the press in Belgium and Denmark, accused Varga.

He also noted that Belgian and Danish ministers of justice have the power to intervene in the work of prosecutors in individual cases, while in Denmark the selection of judges and the administration of courts are not controlled by an independent body.

The European Commission has not expressed concern, citing widespread shortcomings in monitoring judicial activity in Hungary, the Hungarian minister stressed, accusing the Commission of applying double standards.

“For them, the rule of law can only be invoked to blackmail Hungary politically and ideologically,” concluded Judit Varga.

The European Union has entered a deep institutional crisis after Hungary and Poland blocked the budget of 1.82 trillion euros and the fund for the post-Covid recovery.

On Monday, Hungary and Poland blocked the recovery package at a meeting of EU ambassadors, saying they made the decision due to a new rule of law mechanism.
