The young people used plastic extracted from the sea, reused bottles and household waste.

The Dutch students created an electric car entirely out of waste, including sea plastic, recycled PET bottles and household waste.

The bright yellow two-seater, which the students named Luca, can reach speeds of 90km / h and has a range of 200km under full load, Eindhoven University said.

“This machine is really special because it is made entirely of scrap,” project manager Lisa van Etten told Reuters.

“Our frame is made from PET bottles and recycled linen. We also use unsorted domestic waste for interiors, ”he added.

The hard plastic normally found in televisions, toys and appliances has been used for the car body, while the seat cushions are made from coir and horsehair.

The car was designed and built by a group of 22 students over about 18 months, Van Etten said, as part of an effort to demonstrate the potential of the debris.

“We really hope that carmakers will start using waste materials,” said Matthijs van Wijk, a member of the production team.

“It is possible in many applications. More and more companies use waste or materials of biological origin within them. We want to show that it is also possible to build a frame from them, ”he added.
