A photo goes around the world: this is how a doctor comforts a patient with a desperate crown
This image gets under your skin: a doctor in protective suit comfortably holds an elderly patient in his arms. The photo was taken on Thanksgiving, a day usually celebrated with families in the United States. Many were denied the pleasant meeting this year. Those infected with more severe courses are particularly affected: In the corona ward of the hospital, patients not only fight against the virus, but also against isolation.
The doctor in the photo is Joseph Varon. Since the start of the pandemic, he has regularly reported to CNN about the situation in hospitals. He is the chief physician of an intensive care unit at a hospital in Houston, Texas. In an interview, he explains how this photo was taken:
When I go to my Covid unit, I see this older patient got out of bed and is trying to get out of the room and is crying. Then I go up to him and ask him: “Why are you crying?” And the man says, “I want to be with my wife.” So, I take it and keep it. I didn’t know I was photographed at the time.

Varon continues so that the public can see the situation in his hospital, he gave photographer Getty Go Nakamura access to his Covid-19 station. This is how this touching moment was captured.

The older man finally felt better and stopped crying, says Varon. Taken from 256 uninterrupted working days, the doctor himself has an emotional effect as he relives this moment.
He often sat near patients’ beds to chat with them because they simply needed someone.

As Varon reported on the TV show “Good Morning Britain” on Tuesday, the older man was healthy again and reunited with his wife.
Meanwhile, the doctor’s struggle continues. He doesn’t know why he hasn’t collapsed yet:
It wasn’t until Monday that a new record was reached with over 96,000 crown admissions in the United States. This is frustrating for Joseph Varon:
I do this every day and the people out there are doing the wrong thing. People are out there in bars, restaurants, malls – it’s crazy – it’s like we’re working, working, working, working, working and people don’t listen and then end up in my ICU.

For this reason, it repeatedly appeals to the population to adhere to the measures, including for the good of health workers. Warns: If people didn’t do the right thing in the next 6-12 weeks, the United States could see the darkest day in American medical history.
