After the escalation of the dispute over the caricatures of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, the conflict between France and Turkey has intensified. The French satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo” is meanwhile again with a special cartoon of the Turkish head of state.
The French satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo” puts a caricature of the Turkish head of state Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the cover of its new issue. According to a message on Twitter, the drawing is titled “Erdogan – in private is a lot of fun” and shows the president sitting in an armchair lifting a woman’s veil. The new edition of “Charlie Hebdo” will be out on Wednesday.
The atmosphere between France and Turkey is still very heated after the escalation of the dispute over the caricatures of the Islamic prophet Mohammed. French head of state Emmanuel Macron is being criticized increasingly harshly around the world for his statements on Islam and cartoons on Muhammad.
Chechnya president Ramzan Kadyrov compared the French head of state to a “terrorist”. Macron provokes the Muslims and gradually “looks like a terrorist himself,” Kadyrov wrote on Telegram’s messaging service. “By supporting provocations, he secretly encourages Muslims to commit crimes.”
The tensions were triggered by Macron’s statements in defense of freedom of expression after the Islamist attack on a teacher near Paris who had shown Mohammed cartoons in his class. The president also found clear words against the Islamists and stressed that France “will not give up on caricatures and drawings”. Furthermore, Macron recently certified that Islam was in “crisis”.
Macron’s statements brought more than 40,000 people to the streets of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, according to police. Protesters called for a boycott of French goods and burned an image of Macron. The protest was organized by Islami Andolan, one of the largest Islamist parties in the country with a Muslim majority. “Macron is one of the few leaders who worship Satan,” party representative Ataur Rahman said at the rally.
