Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appears on the cover of the next issue of the French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo. The publication posted a Facebook cover on Tuesday, a decision that is likely to further strain relations between Turkey and France, according to dpa, according to Agerpres.
The cartoon depicts Erdogan in a sloppy home dress, sitting in an armchair and lifting the dress of a Muslim woman (chador), with the comment “In private, Erdogan is very funny”.
The next issue of Charlie Hebdo will be released on Wednesday.
Erdogan came to the fore in a wave of discontent in Muslim-majority countries after Charlie Hebdo decided to republish the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that angered Muslims a decade ago.
The Turkish president attacked his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron and called for a boycott of French products. There have also been protests against Macron in Turkey, although public rallies are banned due to the coronavirus.
Representations of the prophet are considered taboo in Islam, and the images in Charlie Hebdo are particularly provocative, with some linking Islam to terrorism.
Erdogan accused French President Emmanuel Macron of allowing the spread of Islamophobia by not banning images.
Macron responded by defending the right to freedom of expression, most recently at the funeral of Samuel Paty, a teacher beheaded in France after presenting some of Charlie Hebdo’s cartoons in class, an hour on freedom of expression.
