Pope Francis has authorized the decree of “martyrdom” with which the Brazilian Isabel Cristina Mrad Campos will be beatified. She was murdered at the age of 20 while opposing her rapist.

The decree, along with other venerables, was approved this Tuesday by the Pope after they were presented to him by the new prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the Italian Marcello Semeraro, who replaced Cardinal Angelo Becciu, separated from the pope for the its involvement in financial irregularities.

Isabel Cristina Mrad Campos was born on July 29, 1962 in Barbacena, Brazil, into a Catholic family and moved with her brother to the city of Juíz de Fora in 1982 to prepare for admission to medical school.

On September 1, 1982, when she returned to her apartment, a young man she had met days earlier tried to abuse her, but when she was rejected, he began beating her with a chair, torturing her and receiving 15 stab wounds.

Since adolescence he has been part of the Voluntary Association of the “Conference of San Vincenzo” and many have testified to his help to people with disabilities and the poorest.

His violent death was considered by Catholics a true martyrdom and the faithful compared the young victim to Santa Maria Goretti, who also died fighting her attacker.

His tomb, located in the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad in Barbacena, is a destination for faithful who also come from distant parts of Brazil, young people place on his tombs known with prayers and requests for grace.

In addition, Francis also authorized the decree approving the heroic virtues of the religious Roberto Joao, of the Congregation of the Sacred Stigmata of Our Lord Jesus Christ; born March 18, 1903 in Río Claro (Brazil) and died in Campinas (Brazil) on January 11, 1994.

The path to holiness has several stages: the first is to be declared venerable servant of God, the second blessed and the third a saint.

Venerable Servant of God is the title given to a deceased who is recognized as having “lived the virtues in a heroic way”.

In order for a venerable person to be beatified, a miracle must have occurred through his intercession, and to be canonized, that is, raised to a saint, a second miracle performed “by intercession” after being proclaimed blessed is necessary.

In the event that “martyrdom” is recognized, a miracle need not be proven.
