The opening has a diameter of about 25 centimeters, but protrudes about 110 meters deep. For the baby Julen, this well at Totalán (near Málaga) was a deadly trap: it fell on Sunday afternoon.
Now it has come out: the hole has been excavated illegally. Probably there has never been the necessary approval. Neither the mine nor the water authority have such a document, said a spokesman for the Andalusian regional government of the newspaper "El País".
Parents watched the fountain from the accident, sleeping in the car and hoping for a miracle. But the uncertainty is exhausting: "I am here – but far from him", laments Julens father José. "I know the forces will not stop trying – but they have not yet managed to reach it."
The helpers are constantly on duty, trying to get the boy out alive. The anxious question is whether Julen survived the fall: "The hours go by, but we still do not know anything about our son."
For parents, the drama can hardly be tolerated because they have already lost a child: his son Oliver got sick in the spring of 2017, he died in almost three years!
Meanwhile, rescue teams are doing everything possible to save Julen: more than 100 helpers have been deployed and have reached a depth of about 73 meters. The only thing they found so far: a bag of sweets and a cup of the boy.
The tragic accident
Julen had come Sunday with his parents and many of their friends on a trip to Totalán. During a picnic, the boy ran around, fell into the unprotected hole. According to local media, it was formed during a reconnaissance drilling in December.
Rescue work is complicated because an adult can not squeeze due to the narrowness of the well. A camera that the helpers had lowered is blocked by a clod of earth. It is not clear where the nodule was born and whether it could have let it slip there from the fall of the baby.
Critics of rescue operations
Meanwhile, the mayor of Totalán, Miguel Ángel Escaño, criticized the rescue operation: "All they did is improvise, it was not appropriate, all the deadlines have passed." In the meantime, he addressed the minister. of the Interior, wants to formulate a personal emergency plan.
The municipal council of Totalán strongly contradicted the mayor by claiming to have "full confidence" in the relief services, said María Gámez.
Three approaches to salvation
▶ ︎ We are still trying to remove the earth through the well
▶ ︎ At the same time, a parallel shaft of 1.5 meters in diameter is constructed. On an entrance for the child to be saved. Particularly critical: this well can easily break.
▶ straight The third option is to dig an access to the well where rescuers come from the side of the mountain beneath the block of earth in the well.
The time is short, and until such a parallel rescue tunnel is built, according to the "el magazine" website, it could take another two days.
La Guardia Civil has announced that it will send a rescue team from the province of Asturias to Totalán, specialized in helping miners. The helpers should arrive Tuesday.
Until then, parents and all of Spain hope and fear for the fate of Julen.
