Renowned QS Quacquarelli Symonds has released its Latin America University Rankings 2021, an annual publication listing the 410 best universities in the region. On this occasion, two Colombian institutions remain in the higher 10, while a total of 60 managed to appear on the list.
On this occasion, the top of the ranking did not show major changes compared to previous years, with no new participants within the top ten places made up of three Brazilian, two Mexican, Chilean and Colombian institutions, and one Argentine. Of these, seven hold their positions.

The table measures eight key university performance indicators: academic reputation, graduate employability, web presence, faculty-to-student ratio, staff with PhDs, international research network, scientific publications and research produced, and citations per article.
Once again, the institution with the best score was the Catholic University of Chile, which in addition to being at the top of the Ranking, it also presents a perfect overall score.

Therefore, the Andes and the Nacional repeat themselves within the higher 10. The former has lost two places compared to the previous list, when it was classified fourth, while the latter remains stable in tenth position.
Ben Sowter, Director of Research at QS, comments: “This year’s edition of our independent audit of Latin American universities indicates that as our exercise matures and our dataset continues to develop, we now see a stable hierarchy: there are no new entrants in the top twenty this year. Within these top twenty, stability is the main feature of the ranking, with PUC Chile the only institution in this band that has seen a significant increase.

Sowter continues: “Although Brazil remains the regional powerhouse of higher education from a research and representation point of view, its local dominance is far less pronounced at the individual indicator level than might be expected. Only one of its universities is in the Top 30 in the region for graduate employability and their impact on research does not match the productivity of raw research. Chile and Colombia score higher for our employability indicator, while also struggling to achieve maximum scores for our measure of teaching ability “.
How did Colombia do it?
For this edition, Colombia’s participation was much more significant than in previous years, placing 60 institutions among the 410 best in the region, making it the third country with the largest number of universities on the list, just behind Brazil. (94) and Mexico (66). Argentina (42), Chile (40) and Peru (20) follow.

The ten best Colombian universities according to Ranking The QS are as follows:

Again, the higher 10 national shows no changes compared to the measure of the previous year. However, there is evidence of improvement in most of these institutions.
For example, cases such as the University of La Sabana stand out, passing from place 62 of the last measurement to place 48, increasing by fourteen positions.
Other notable cases are those of Valle, who improved eight positions, and Rosario and Valle, who improved seven positions each. Conversely, there were other institutions that went down the ladder, such as the Andes and the Javeriana (each with two locations).

The Universidad del Rosario was among the first to react to the publication. John Leonardo Vargas, Competitive Intelligence coordinator of the Directorate of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness of alma mater noted: “This is a sign that the job and academic market recognizes Rosario a seal of quality and trust. In this edition, the university ranked 26th in Latin America for reputation with employers, this being one of the most relevant indicators of Ranking”.
