From a great distance, the Arecibo telescope looked like a giant eye in the thick green of the trees. An eye with which astronomers have searched in space, even for signs of distant civilizations. This eye has been blind since Tuesday.
On that day, the US National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that the instrument holder hanging from steel cables above the receiving bowl had crashed. No one was injured, but the telescope was destroyed.
