(CNN) – The US secretary of state and the Cuban foreign minister exchanged harsh accusations on Twitter about a rapper jailed by the Cuban government and a group of dissidents protesting his arrest on the Communist island.
“We call on the Cuban regime to stop the harassment of protesters of the San Isidro movement and to release the musician Denis Solís,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wrote on Twitter Tuesday evening. “Freedom of expression is a human right. The United States supports the people of Cuba.
“Secretary Pompeo is lying,” Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla replied on Twitter Wednesday. “The United States has never supported the Cuban people. Your government is determined to attack our people in any way possible. “
Solís was sentenced to eight months in prison in November for “contempt” for insulting a Cuban police officer who, he said, entered his home without permission. Solís was not a known musician before his arrest.
At least six members of the San Isidro Movement, a group of dissidents protesting against government censorship, continue the hunger strike demanding Solís’ release.
The Cuban police have isolated the building where the dissidents are on hunger strike and have not allowed journalists or diplomats to visit the demonstrators.
