This year there will hardly be foreign tourists on the local ski slopes. Due to the corona pandemic, they are subject to strict entry and exit rules. This scares many. And this also has consequences for Switzerland. With bankruptcy, the country will lose billions in sales.
BLICK calculates: the added value in the winter season in Switzerland was around 15 billion francs in previous years. This is based on an estimate by Switzerland Tourism based on data from the Federal Statistical Office in collaboration with the Economic Research Center (KOF).
The most important German tourists
The most important European winter guests for Switzerland are by far the Germans. They represent 13% of the seasonal added value. This is followed by five percent from the Benelux countries, namely Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Another 2.6% of guests are from the UK and 2.3% from France.
Altogether, around 3.3 billion francs of the total appreciation in the winter season will go to their roof. Money that this year will be greatly missed by Swiss hoteliers, restaurateurs and holiday home providers.
Value added is an estimate of how much money is earned from tourism, based on the number of overnight stays. This includes expenses such as food, tickets, groceries and other expenses. The estimate is based on the assumption that every tourist – whether from Switzerland or from other European countries – spends approximately the same amount per day of vacation.
The Swiss cannot absorb losses
“We hope that the Swiss will travel further into the mountains and absorb this loss,” a spokesperson for Switzerland Tourism told BLICK. “However, booking levels for the Christmas holidays in the mountains are 19% lower than the previous year.”
In fact, the Swiss make up almost 70% of winter tourists in Switzerland. According to the spokesperson for Switzerland Tourism, most winter tourists, both from home and abroad, usually go to the mountains. Half of all guests want to ski. It is followed by hikers with 30 percent. The rest of them want to go tobogganing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing.
Due to the Crown crisis, many European tourists find it difficult to travel to Switzerland. Although some even own houses here. In Germany, returnees have to enter a ten-day quarantine. In France, in addition to quarantine, corona tests are also threatened at the border. The British must also be quarantined after their stay in Switzerland.
