In Belarus, the police use force against peaceful protesters. Numerous people are arrested, many of them have now been released.
According to Wesna’s human rights group, more than 1,000 protesters were arrested during Sunday’s demonstration against ruler Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus. The human rights center has listed the names of more than 1,040 people arrested on its website. Most of them were therefore in police custody in the capital Minsk. Among them were also several journalists. Many were released that evening after being screened. Authorities did not initially release arrest data.
Thousands of people had already participated in the protests. Security forces have sometimes used massive violence against peaceful protesters. Videos on the Telegram news channel showed how men in hooded uniforms used tear gas and stun grenades. In this way they broke the individual gatherings. Eyewitnesses also reported rubber bullets.
There have been regular protests since the presidential election on 9 August. Lukashenko was declared the winner with 80.1% of the votes. The EU no longer recognizes him as president. The opposition sees civil rights activist Svetlana Tichanovskaya as the real winner. She fled to EU country Lithuania.
