Since a fragile peace agreement has been signed in September, the former belligerent parties in South Sudan have worked to rebuild confidence in some of the areas most affected by the war.
To reduce tensions, opposition fighters are trained in humanitarian law and some are incorporated with their former enemies, the army.
Just a few months ago, such reconciliation efforts seemed implausible in South Sudan, where the five-year civil war killed nearly 400,000 people and displaced millions.
But peace is still a bit shaky and uncomfortable. The Associated Press visited a desolate city near the Ugandan border, where distrusting residents in a squalid displaced camp said peace was still too uncertain for them to return to their homes.
