Sonderweg: Sweden announces record number of positive tests

In Sweden, health authorities report a record of positive new tests with 5990 cases. As a result, another 42 people who tested positive for the corona virus died. This brings the total number of deaths statistically recorded to 6164.

Sweden is known for its special way in the pandemic, there are no severe restrictions on public life. In terms of population, the country has significantly more crown deaths than its northern European neighbors, but at the same time fewer than countries like Spain, which have taken much stricter measures.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven commented on the situation: “All the indicators point in the wrong direction,” he said at a news conference. Due to the corona infection numbers, the government wants to ban the sale of alcohol in restaurants after 10pm. Bars and pubs also have to close half an hour later. The ban will take effect on November 20 and will last until the end of February. In Stockholm, authorities banned visits to retirement homes to curb broadcasts.

Sweden made headlines internationally with its special course in the Corona crisis. There are fewer restrictions there than in other countries: citizens can continue to visit restaurants and pubs there, but with up to eight people at the same table. In addition, in many regions of the country there are urgent recommendations for avoiding contacts, local transport and events.
