Sindika Dokolo, businessman and art collector, has been married since 2002 to Isabel dos Santos, with whom she has four children.
He was born in 1972 in former Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the son of banker Augustin Dokolo Sanu and his second wife, the Danish Hanne Taabbel.
Critical of President Joseph Kabila’s nearly 20 years in the DRC, Sindika Dokolo spent nearly five years in exile due to the lawsuits filed against him in Kinshasa, returning to the country in May 2019, months after opponent Félix Tshisekedi’s presidential victory in December 2018.
The couple is suspected of damaging the Angolan state for millions of dollars and was targeted in December 2019 for seizure of assets and stakes in companies, according to the Luanda Provincial Court. Both have always denied the allegations.
Sindika Dokolo died while practicing a form of diving, known locally as ‘al-hivari’, which uses no breathing equipment and relies on the exclusive use of air in the lungs.
However, Dubai police said they did not suspect any “criminal act” in the businessman’s death.
