The “Kalima” project at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, yesterday morning, organized a symposium entitled “Supporting translators in the Arab world, the Kalima project as a model”, on the occasion of International Translation Day, in collaboration with Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi. Dr Thanaa Abbas, a lecturer in Arabic language and culture at Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi, and journalist Tariq Rashid, researcher and programmer for Abu Dhabi TV, attended the symposium and was moderated by Maliha Al-Obaidly. Dr Thanaa Abbas translated from Arabic into French to introduce university students to the dialogue taking place at the symposium. .
Al-Obaidly introduced the participants of the “Kalima” project, saying: “The Kalima project aims to revive the translation movement in the Arab world, supports the cultural movement active in Abu Dhabi and contributes to its role in spreading the cultural scene and in institution of an Arab and international scientific and cultural renaissance, and I was known for his efforts represented in organizing related activities and activities. Translating and translating major international books, as well as providing a database for translators themselves, supporting and developing the translated book industry for the Arab world, promoting it on the international stage and establishing respect for intellectual property rights through the conclusion of publishing agreements with international publishers according to international publishing standards and encouraging reading and contribution in connecting the scientific research movement in the Arab world ”.
For his part, Tariq Rashid focused on the difficulties faced by translators and projects working in this field, and how to find solutions to them, referring to the experience of the Kalima project for translation, and how he managed to take the initiative in translation projects in the Arab world, and to attract exceptional skills in the field of translation and support them in developing their skills, according to a long-term strategy, and Rashid recalled in his speech the importance of the translator and the names of numerous winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature, and as a Nobel he got to know these creative writers through translation. The importance of translation in the works of the Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz and the translation of his works into other languages, and that translation is one of the reasons for obtaining the Nobel.
On the sidelines of the symposium, “Kalima” organized an exhibition to sell books, with discounts of up to 80% on the latest publications. As part of the celebration of International Translation Day and in collaboration with government agencies and institutions of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, it organized book fairs for employees, with discounts of up to 80%, in: Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation for Humanitarian Work, Ministry of Health and Prevention, Department of Urban Planning, municipalities and municipalities of the city of Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Housing Authority, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company: ADNOC, Tadweer: Abu Dhabi Center for Waste Management, Abu Dhabi Council for Quality and Conformity, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and Hamdan Bin Zayed School.
For its part, the Kalima Reading Club organizes on this occasion two activities: one of which is for the children of Hamdan Bin Zayed School and includes the reading of children’s stories in Arabic and Chinese, and the other is a cultural session at the Fair of Al Ain’s book to discuss the book “Youth, Age from a Cultural Perspective” translated from English by its author Robert Pugh Harrison.
