Controversial advisor to incumbent US President Donald Trump on coronavirus issues Scott Atlas has resigned, the BBC announces. He has been repeatedly accused of providing Trump with false and misleading information about the Covid pandemic in the United States, one of the hardest-hit states in the world.
Thanking Trump for the honor of serving the American people, Dr. Scott Atlas said he “always relies on the latest scientific evidence, without any political consideration or influence.”
Dr. Scott Atlas was heavily criticized in early November after posting a message on Twitter urging Michigan Americans to “resist” the new COVID-19 restrictions announced by Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
During his four months as an advisor, Atlas questioned the need for masks and other pandemic control measures.
Public health experts, such as Anthony Fauci and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have accused Scott Atlas of providing President Trump with false and misleading information about the spread of the virus, Mediafax notes.
Colleagues at his own university strongly criticized him for promoting a vision of Covid-19 that contradicted medical science. They welcomed his resignation, saying it was overt “long overdue and emphasizes the triumph of science and truth over falsehood and disinformation”.
In his resignation letter from Fox News, Dr. Atlas said his board “has always focused on minimizing all the damage caused by both the pandemic and the structural policies themselves, especially for the working class and the poor.”
The United States has more than 11 million cases of coronavirus infection, according to a Johns Hopkins University report. It is the highest number of cases recorded by a country, and another negative record derives from the fact that in less than a week almost one million people have fallen ill with Covid.
