At the lowest point on Earth, in the middle of a gigantic salt lake where animals and plants have no chance to survive, a cheerful man dressed in red with a long white beard has set up a Christmas tree and went swimming.

Santa Claus arrived on the Dead Sea this Sunday 15-N before Christmas, as part of an Israeli Ministry of Tourism campaign to bring some Christmas cheer during a global pandemic that has kept pilgrims away from the Holy Land.

He rode a paddle board a few hundred meters offshore to a place where the salt had accumulated in a huge mushroom shape, allowing him to stand in the middle of the otherwise much deeper lake.

With pomp and circumstance, he placed a decorated Christmas tree on the salty bottom, posed for the cameras and then enjoyed floating in the famous and rich salt waters of the Dead Sea.

Beyond the fascinating scenery, Christianity has its roots in the Dead Sea, whose surroundings abound with the remains of ancient Christian communities.

However, the Christmas tree had no chance of surviving in the salty waters, and Santa took it away when he returned to shore.
