The American ship operated for several days in the Sea of Japan and was monitored by Russia.
The ship Admiral Vinogradov, an antisubmarine destroyer belonging to the Russian fleet in the Pacific, sent a warning to the Americans and threatened that it “will use a push maneuver to drive the intruder out of its territorial waters,” according to the minister.
The American ship immediately returned to international waters, the Russian minister also specified.
In response, the US Pacific Fleet said the destroyer USS John S. McCain was “exercising its right to sail” in the area, “challenging the excessive claims of the Russian Navy.”
The US military did not provide further details, but said the US ship was sailing in the vicinity of Peter the Great Bay, in an area that the US does not recognize as belonging to the territorial waters of Russia.
The area was the subject of a dispute in 1984 when the Soviet Union declared it part of its territorial waters, a claim that Russia upheld.
