D.and agreement with the Investment Fund Direct of Russia and the National Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology Gamaleya, a preliminary analysis of 20 cases of covid19 identified among clinical trial participants led to the conclusion that the vaccine is 92% effective.

These results are the result of an analysis of over 16,000 volunteers, out of a total of 40,000 involved in the trial, which took place three weeks after receiving the first dose of vaccine or a placebo.

The announcement, released today by the scientific journal Nature, was made Wednesday in a statement posted on the Sputnik V website, two days after pharmaceutical company Pfizer revealed interim data indicate that its vaccine could be effective in 90% of cases.

Pfizer’s conclusions, however, come from the record of 94 infections among nearly 44,000, representing a larger sample than Russian.

Due to this difference, an epidemiologist britIan Evans, quoted by Nature, warns that the limited number of cases reported in the Sputnik V study implies a lower degree of certainty about the vaccine’s effectiveness.

“Additional monitoring is needed because the results are consistent with much lower effectiveness – 60% – based on this data,” he says.

Another specialist in immunology quoted from the same publication, Shane Crotty, says “I would finish nothing after 20 events”.

The development of the Russian vaccine against covid-19 has been controversial, as the clinical trial protocol has not been made public, unlike other candidates, such as Pfizer’s, and it is therefore not clear whether a preliminary analysis of the 20 positive cases was already planned.

“I’m afraid this data has been rushed since Pfizer’s announcement,” another Nature said immunologist britanica, Eleanor Riley, warning that “this is not a competition”.

At the beginning of September, preliminary results of a study published by the scientific journal The Lancet found that the Russian vaccine against covid-19 is safe, not provoked reactions severe adverse reactions and induced an antibody response.

A pandemic from covid-19 caused at least 1,285,160 deaths in over 52.1 million cases of infection around the world, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 3,181 people died from 198,011 cases of infection confirmed, according to the most recent Direction-General health.

The disease is transmitted from a new one coronavirus detected not in the end December of 2019, am Wuhan, a city in central China.
