US President Donald Trump has forgiven his former national security adviser Michael Flynn. It is a great honor for him to announce that Flynn, accused in the Russia affair, will receive full pardon, Trump announced on Twitter.
At the same time, he congratulated the former general and his “wonderful family”: “I know you are going to have a really great Thanksgiving now.”
Influencing the judiciary?
Trump had repeatedly dismissed investigations into Russia’s influence on the 2016 US election and alleged collusion with his electoral team as a “witch hunt”. Flynn had only been in office as National Security Advisor for just over three weeks in 2017. Later, in the course of investigating possible Russian influence, he admitted lying to the FBI federal police. He is also said to have lied to Vice President Mike Pence on the matter. Flynn was the only one to plead guilty to FBI Special Investigator Robert Mueller’s investigation. The former general subsequently withdrew the admission of guilt.
In May, the Justice Department called for the investigation of Flynn to be stopped in a very unusual move. He is not convinced that his hearing in January 2017 took place on a legitimate investigative basis, he said among other things. Trump then hailed Flynn as a “hero”. Critics suspected political influence on the judiciary. The case was blocked in federal court after the Ministry of Justice’s controversial advance. The responsible judge had not agreed to drop the charges against Flynn.
Previously already pardoned Stone
Prior to Flynn, Trump had already saved his longtime confidant Roger Stone from prison in connection with the investigation into Russia. A few days before Stone went to jail, Trump released him. In February, Stone was sentenced to three years and four months in prison after being convicted of false testimony in Congress, manipulation of witnesses and obstruction of Congress.
Observers expect the president to be able to forgive other confidants by the end of his term on January 20.
