Michael Knapinski, 45, disappeared in the frost of Mount Rainier National Park last weekend.

Knapinski, who was found after spending a night on the mountain, was then taken by helicopter to the Seattle hospital. He had a pulse when he arrived at the hospital, but his heart stopped afterward.

Dr. “He died in the emergency room,” Jenelle Badulak told the Seattle Times.

He was then given a heart massage and then connected to an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine (ECMO). This device cleans the carbon dioxide in the blood from his body and then returns it to his body.

After 45 minutes, his heart started beating again and two days later he woke up.

Nurse Whitney Nolan said, “She cried, she cried and I’m sure I cried a little too.”

“It was really special to see someone wake up that we worked hard on from start to finish,” Nolan said.

Knapinski, still in hospital, told CBS that after recovering from a severe drug addiction, he began hiking.

“I was a very unhealthy and sick man and then I started hiking. It changed my life,” said Knapinski. Knapinski also said doctors refused to admit he was dead. “They are doing a great job of keeping me alive,” he said.
