Pope Francis has appointed 13 new cardinals, including the Archbishop of Washington, Wilton Gregory, the first black American prelate to be admitted to the so-called “Principles of the Church”.

In the homily of the consistory, the pope commented on the passage from the Gospel of Mark (10: 32-45), in which Jesus and his disciples are on their way to Jerusalem. In reality, the Pope remarked, the road is not only the space in which this episode of the Gospel takes place, but also “the environment in which the Church’s journey always unfolds: the journey of life, of history, which is history of salvation as traveled. together with Christ, oriented to his paschal mystery. (…) The cross and the resurrection belong to our history, they are our present, but also the goal of our journey ”. Furthermore, the context of the road is also a “road sign” for us, who today are on the journey with Jesus, who walks the road in front of us. It is the strength and meaning of our life and our ministry “.
The evangelist notes that those who followed him “were amazed” and “terrified” (v. 32) because they knew what awaited them in Jerusalem: Jesus himself spoke to them many times.

Pope Francis: «The Lord knows the state of mind of those who follow him and this fact does not leave him indifferent. Jesus never leaves his friends, he never neglects them. Even when He seems to see you before His way, He always does it for us. Everything he does, he does it for us, for our salvation ».
In the specific case of the Twelve, Jesus prepares them for the trial “so that they can be with Him now and especially later, when He will no longer be among them, so that they can always be with Him on their way”. Therefore, Jesus tells them again what would happen to him (v. 32): the passion of his death and resurrection. This is the way of the Son of God. The way of the servant of the Lord, Jesus. However, two of his disciples approach Jesus and ask him to grant places of honor, right and left, in his glory (v. 37).

Faced with the expectations of the two disciples, the pope further observed: “Jesus is not upset, he is not angry”, but he tells them that they do not realize what they are asking. In other words, they don’t realize they are off track.
Pope Francis: “Dear brothers, we all love Jesus, we all want to follow him, but we must always be vigilant to stay on the path he is following. Because our feet and our bodies can be with Him, but our hearts can be far away and lead us astray. Let us think of many types of corruption in the priestly life. This episode of the Gospel, Pope Francis concluded, highlights an impressive contrast: Jesus on the way and they, the disciples, astray. There are two irreconcilable paths. “Only the Lord, in reality, can save his friends who are lost and in danger of being lost, only his Cross and Resurrection”. “Even if the Twelve make a bad face, this text has entered the canon because it shows the truth about Jesus and us. Two of the thirteen cardinals recently appointed by Pope Francis are part of the Roman Curia: the general secretary of the Synod of Bishops, the Maltese Mario Grech, and the Italian Marcello Semeraro, bishop emeritus of Albano, recently appointed prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints .

Four new cardinals are octogenarians and therefore do not vote: the archbishop emeritus of San Cristóbal de Las Casas (Mexico), Msgr.
