“Poor conditions”: the Paris police cleared the camps with over 2,000 migrants

Police cleared another large migrant camp north of Paris. On Tuesday, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin tweeted that some 2,000 people were living in the Stade de France camp “in miserable conditions”.

The eviction began early in the morning. The head of the prefecture said that the people who lived there would be housed.

The Paris police have cleared dozens of these camps in recent years. But the slum camps where migrants live in tents in inhumane conditions continue to form on the outskirts of Paris. The problem: they lack permanent housing. It often takes only a few weeks for the first tents to rise after they have been cleaned.

Critics see evictions as a purely symbolic policy, as nothing changes in the current system. In a joint statement, several organizations speak of an “endless and destructive cycle”. “How many days before these people are put back on the street?” Asked the refugee organization Utopia 56.

The newspaper “Le Parisien” wrote that the field at the Stade de France was formed by a motorway bridge in the department of Seine-Saint-Denis in August. According to this, mainly men from Afghanistan, Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia lived there. Humanitarian organizations also reported families with children.
