Macron shocked by “shameful” images
A video of a new case of police violence continues to cause outrage in France, even in the highest circles: Even President Macron is shocked by the police’s brutal attack on a black man. But that’s not the only reason he and his interior minister are under pressure.
After outrage over a new case of police violence against a black man in France, President Emmanuel Macron spoke of “unacceptable aggression”. The producer, whose first name was Michel, said police attacked him for no reason. “You said ‘dirty nigger’ several times and beat me,” he said in front of the Paris police inspectorate, where he filed a complaint with his lawyer.
Interior Minister Darmanin accused police officers of having “stained the uniform of the republic”. The Paris police had already been targeted this week for their brutal use against refugees. The prefect of the Paris police Didier Lallement and his employer Darmanin are therefore under pressure, demands for resignation are strong from the opposition.
Darmanin also faces massive protests from associations of journalists and left-wing activists. On Saturday you again called for demonstrations against a planned law for “global security”. The interior minister wants explosive recordings of police operations to be a criminal offense.
