Patriarch Irinej: the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church of Covid-19 has died

Serbian Orthodox Patriarch Irinej I died of coronavirus at the age of 90. This was announced by the Patriarch in Belgrade. Irinej tested positive for coronavirus two weeks ago. He has since been treated in a Belgrade military hospital.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic wrote on his Instagram account on Friday. “It was an honor to meet you. People like you never leave us. ”

The patriarch’s last appearance was at the funeral of the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro, Archbishop Amfilohije. He also died at the age of 82 from a coronary infection. Thousands of people attended the funeral.

Irinej was the 45th Patriarch of the Serbs. About 85% of Serbs profess the Christian Orthodox faith. A three-day state mourning was declared.
