What an incredible story.
The hull of his overturned boat was his last stop just 140 kilometers off the Florida coast: a 62-year-old American was rescued Sunday from an extremely precarious situation by the crew of a container ship.
Stuart Bee’s boat was no longer able to drive on Saturday due to technical problems, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Bee reportedly woke up suddenly Sunday after midnight when water seeped into the bow cabin of the boat and pushed it through the hatch. After dawn, he discovered a ship near him and was able to draw attention to himself.
According to the Coast Guard, Bee left on Friday afternoon (local time) in Port Canaveral. It is unclear whether the man personally made an emergency call after discovering the defect and for how long he was in trouble.
When the container ship arrived, Bee was hanging from the hull of her boat, with only the tip sticking out of the water. He was able to swim to an ejected life buoy and finally aboard the ship completely soaked.
Mark Vlaun of the Jacksonville Coast Guard after the rescue operation: “This is a truly incredible achievement.”
