To date, Barack Obama’s memoirs (59) are on the shelves of books – at least the first part. The English-language original of “A Promised Land,” in which the former US president talks mainly about his presidential campaign and his tenure until the assassination of Osama bin Laden, comprises a whopping 764 pages.
In his round of interviews around the publication, however, another topic dominates: his successor Donald Trump (74) and his refusal to admit his defeat.
“We would never accept such behavior with our children if they lose, right?”, Says Obama, father of Malia (22) and Sasha (19), in an interview with “60 Minutes”. In the same interview format, Donald Trump was also a guest shortly before the US election, but the conversation was rashly cut off. “I mean, if my daughters sulked in a competition and then, if they lost, accused the other side of cheating, even if there was no evidence, we would scold them.”
“It takes more than an election against Trump”
In an interview with “The Atlantic” Obama makes it clear that Trump is not exactly the embodiment of traditional American masculinity, as some conservatives claim. “There is the idea that a man keeps his word, that he takes responsibility, that he doesn’t complain about not being a tyrant – but defending the weak from tyrants.” None of this holds true for Trump. He looks more like Richie Rich, an obnoxious nineties movie character who “complains, lies, takes no responsibility.”
Regarding Trump’s US-led split, Obama tells the BBC: “It takes more than an election to reverse this trend.” Trump had instigated different sections of the population against each other for political reasons, including through his handling of the truth. In this way, a way has been established of dealing with what some call “the decay of truth”, in which “everything is permitted and the facts do not count”.
Trump has put Obama’s security at risk
Barack Obama and his family suffered as a result long before the election, when Trump spread the claim that Obama was not born in the United States and therefore was not legally in office. “He promised millions of Americans who were frightened by a black man in the White House, an elixir to cure their ethnic fears,” writes Obama in his memoir, from which “Spiegel” published an excerpt in advance.
Trump’s unbridled security has put his family in danger. It is clear that Trump “wasted no thought on the consequences of spreading conspiracy theories he almost certainly knew were wrong, as long as he achieved his goals.” (relative)
