Norway plans to use the three vaccines developed by Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer / BioNTech in its first COVID-19 immunization campaign, Norwegian Health Minister Bent Hoeie told Reuters on Friday, according to Reuters.
In the first half of 2021, Oslo will receive a total of 2.5 million doses, targeting 1.25 million people – or 23% of the population, pending vaccine approval by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). .
The doses would cover about 1.3 million people in Norway considered at risk, Minister Bent Hoeie said, while 340,000 healthcare workers will have to wait for them to come into contact with patients.
Norway, which is not a member of the EU, will have access to some vaccines obtained by the European Union thanks to Sweden, an EU member, which will buy more doses than necessary and sell them to Norway immediately after the new year.
“By Easter we may be in a completely different situation than today,” the Norwegian official said.
Norway will act faster than previously announced. Prime Minister Erna Solberg said in October that vaccinations should begin in the first half of 2021.
In Norway, the first to be vaccinated will be nursing home residents and ‘elderly’ people living at home, followed by people over the age of 65 and young adults with pre-existing medical conditions.
Oslo will also provide free vaccines which will be part of the country’s national vaccination program.
