Polish scientists today detected the first cases of the novel coronavirus on mink, after examining 91 animals raised in captivity and confirming the infection in eight of them.

“This is the first case of confirmed infection of captive animals with the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Poland,” said researchers at Gdansk Medical University who worked in collaboration with veterinarians.

Cases of coronavirus have been detected in a mink (or mink) farm in the Pomerania region of northern Poland.

The findings from Polish scientists came two days after the French government ordered the slaughter of all captive mink after an analysis showed that a mutant version of the novel coronavirus was circulating among animals.

In Denmark, a mutation of the virus was found in more than 200 people infected with mink and the government has decided to cull 15 million animals.
