What a security hole!

A Dutch journalist entered a confidential videoconference of EU defense ministers!

Journalist Daniel Verlaan used a photo posted on Twitter by Dutch Defense Minister Ank Bijleveld, broadcaster RTL Nieuws said.

The picture showed five of the six digits of the meeting access code on Bijleveld’s desk. The minister is currently in quarantine and works from home. The missing figure was apparently discovered, and Verlaan was able to switch to videoconferencing. It wasn’t long before politicians realized there was one more person at stake than originally anticipated. The smiling reporter in a black T-shirt could be seen on video greeting the ministers.

The hack in the photo

“Do you know that you are attending a secret meeting?” Asked EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell. “Yes, yes, I’m sorry. I’m a Dutch journalist, “Verlaan replied as the other attendees laughed in the background.” I’m sorry I interrupted your conference, I’ll go right away. ” The ministerial meeting was canceled for security reasons later.

A spokesman for the Dutch Defense Ministry spoke of a “stupid mistake”. Instead of the original photo, there are now only pictures of the passage on Bijleveld’s account. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has warned his cabinet colleagues to strengthen online security.

According to Josep Borrell, the reporter could be prosecuted for his hack. It is not yet known whether this will happen.
