The city on the knees of the Rhine is the most popular Swiss city among foreign specialists, according to a survey by the consulting firm Internations in Munich. Followed by Lausanne, Zurich and Geneva. Valencia, Alicante and Lisbon share the podium around the world.
In particular, Basel ranks 24th out of a total of 66 places in the world. This is followed by Lausanne in 28th place, Zurich in 37th and Geneva in 48th, this is the result of the “Expat City Ranking 2020” published on Thursday by Internations.
While Lausanne, Zurich and Basel entered the world top 15 in the quality of life category, Geneva lagged behind with 28th place in this category. In addition, Geneva is the only one of the cities surveyed in Switzerland that ranks among the ten worst in the world for finance and housing and cost of living categories.
Especially good: working in the city
In the end, however, Basel was rated the best city in Switzerland. Basel achieved the best results in all categories and in particular in the category of works in the city, thus securing the first place among Swiss cities.
Second place also Lausanne scored points in terms of safety and quality of life, while expats living in Zurich complain of the difficulty of making new friends.
In the world rankings, Valencia secured first place ahead of Alicante and Lisbon. At the bottom of the ranking are also metropolises such as Rome, Paris, Johannesburg and Hong Kong. The expats surveyed rated Salmiya in Kuwait as the worst city in the world.
