Giscard D’Estaing was head of state from 1974 to 1981. Elected president at 48, Giscard d’Estaing succeeded De Gaulle’s years of power and sought to liberalize both the economy and social attitudes.

Under his mandate, abortion was legalized and divorce sanctioned by mutual consent, both considered two major social advances at the time. He also advanced the voting age to 18.

The president was also known as one of the architects of the European integration project. He was very close to the German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, with whom he laid the foundations of the European currency in what would become the European Monetary System.

Giscard d’Estaing lost his re-election in 1981 in favor of the socialist François Mitterrand.

Prior to his election, Giscard d’Estaing was finance minister when Georges Pompidou was prime minister, between 1962 and 1966. He returned to government with the same functions when Pompidou was already president between 1969 and 1974.

After his time in Eliseu, he was a member of the European Parliament and devoted himself to writing, including at the French Academy. In his long political career he was a deputy, held various positions in local and regional politics and served on the Constitutional Council.

In March this year he was accused by a German journalist of sexual harassment and an investigation was opened to ascertain the facts.
