Microsoft last Friday called for action against cyber attacks by states and “evil actors” against health organizations.
“In recent months, we have detected cyber attacks by three state actors targeting seven major companies directly involved in research into vaccines and treatments for covid-19,” said Tom Burt, Microsoft’s vice president of security. Burt said the targets include major pharmaceutical companies and research centers in Canada, France, India, South Korea and the United States.
“The attacks came from Strontium, originally from Russia, and from two North Korean agents we call Zinc and Cerium,” Burt added. “We believe these attacks are unfair and should be condemned by society as a whole,” Burt said in a blog post.
Tom Burt called on governments to check legal regulations in cyberspace, adding that Microsoft has offered to help interested companies. For example, Burt said Cerium was using emails with topics about covid-19, while pretending to represent the World Health Organization.
“We believe the law should apply not only when attacks come from government agencies, but also when they come from criminal groups that governments allow to operate – or even facilitate – within their borders,” Burt said. “This is a criminal activity that cannot be tolerated.”
Microsoft has accused Strontium, also known as “Fancy Bear” or “APT28”, of attacking more than 200 organizations, including electoral groups and political parties involved in this year’s US presidential election. The group was also accused of misconduct during the 2016 US election.
