Merkel warns against “lies and misinformation” in the fight against coronavirus – News

“Let me be clear: lies and disinformation, conspiracy and hatred are not only damaging the democratic debate, but also the fight against the coronavirus,” Merkel told the lower house of the German parliament.

Merkel announced on Wednesday drastic measures to contain the second wave of Covid-19 in Germany, such as the closure of restaurants and recreation areas for a month, accompanied by aid of up to 10 billion euros for the economy to cope with the shock.

Deputies from the far-right Alternative to Germany (AfD) party, the third political force in the lower house, protested shouting against the measures during the Chancellor’s speech.

Something unusual also happened. Parliament president Wolfgang Schauble had to briefly interrupt Merkel’s speech to demand order and threaten deputies with sanctions.

“Populism is not only far from reality, it is also irresponsible”, Merkel added, before stressing that the measures adopted were “adequate, necessary and proportionate”.
