Merck celebrates World Science Day by empowering women and young people in science

Merck Foundation (Merck-Foundation.com), the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, celebrates World Science Day through the Merck Africa Research Summit – MARS Awards 2020 for the best African young researchers and the best African female researchers.

Dr Rasha Kelej, CEO of the Merck Foundation and one of the 100 most influential Africans (2019, 2020) explains: “The Merck Foundation empowers women and young people in scientific research through the” MARS Best Young African Researchers Awards “and” MARS Best African Women Researchers Awards “.

The Merck Foundation established these awards in 2015.

“We will announce the MARS 2020 winners by the end of this year. The winners will be eligible for a scholarship for training programs to improve their skills and standards in scientific research,” added Dr Rasha Kelej.

The Merck Foundation is launching these awards to recognize the outstanding contribution of young African and female scientists to empower them in research and advance their contribution to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). This program is in partnership with the African Union and the African ministries of health, science, education and gender.

The Merck Foundation’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program works with global and local institutions and organizations to empower women and young people in the fields of science and technology. The Merck Foundation believes that education is an important factor in promoting economic well-being in Africa.

The Merck Foundation has celebrated over 40 Merck Africa Research Summit-MARS Awards winners in past editions, from 18 African countries including Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda , Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
