Barranquilla resumes preparations for the assembly of Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) 2021. Mayor Jaime Pumarejo Heins visit the American city of Washington to meet the new president of the international organization, Mauricio Claver-Carone.
The meeting is scheduled for this Friday at 2:30 pm and it is the first official visit that the IDB receives from a delegation of a Latin American country that belongs to the agency, after the agenda scheduled for March this year was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The district chairman assured this during the meeting the city will be ratified as the seat of the Assembly next year, which will be the first to be led by Claver-Carone as president of the institution.
“In this meeting we will define the essential aspects of the solid organization that implies this world-class event that we will host in our city,” said Pumarejo.
The mayor also stated this the options are being reviewed with the Bank to access long-term direct loans, taking into account the good credit history in the execution of the resources granted 5 years ago under the Sustainable and Competitive Emerging Cities program of the IDB.
The agenda also includes meetings with the director of Colombia and Peru before the IDB, Sergio Diazgranados; the director of IDB Lab, the innovation laboratory of the IDB Group; directors of sustainable development and urban development, among other senior officials.

The Barranquilla delegation is composed of the Secretary for Economic Development, Ricardo Plata Sarabia; the Secretary General, Carlos Acosta Juliao, and the Councilor for Communications, Ricardo Villa Pérez.
The assembly
After the postponement due to the pandemic, the Secretariat of the Inter-American Development Bank reported that the Board of Governors of IDB and IDB Invest will be held March 17-21, 2021, at the Puerta de Oro Convention and Events Center.
In this space The economic and financial leaders of its 48 member countries will have the opportunity to analyze the challenges facing the development of Latin America and the Caribbean.and, especially after the health and economic crisis caused by Covid-19.
In this sense, Barranquilla has resumed preparations to welcome this event that promises to be one of the most important in its recent history, and which will now also be the spearhead of the process of economic reactivation and attraction of investments, taking into account that the goal is to position the city as an international destination in which to invest, to work and to live, as confirmed by Mayor Pumarejo.
It will be the first time that the assembly will be held in Barranquilla and the fifth time in Colombia, after four previous occasions our country was the official seat: Bogotá (1968), Cartagena (1982-1998) and Medellín (2009).
