Good morning, dear readers,

here is the commented overview of the topics of the day:

WAS THE WAR?

Power is only fruitful when it is limited. In democracies, power is legitimized firstly by the will of the people, secondly for a limited period and thirdly, bound by clear rules. Those who sit at the top must leave their seats if the majority of citizens so request. No state is perfect, not even democracies, but the containment of power prevents excesses and prevents brutal government with disastrous consequences.

What happens, If power is not bound by democratic rules based on the rule of law, we see in many places: In Azerbaijan the autocrat Aliyev attacked neighboring Armenia to wrest the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave under the nail. The war caused numerous deaths and shook the entire Caucasus. In turkey Erdogan’s autocratic behavior plunged the country and its people into a profound economic crisis. It alienates the EU’s important trading partners and insults French President Macron for denouncing Islamism. In Hungary Orban overthrew the parliament. He enforces his will by means of an emergency ordinance and silences critical journalists. In Belarus Dictator Lukashenko tries to save his regime with the help of brutal police violence against peaceful protesters. In Russia Putin bends the constitution to rule forever and has opponents killed. In China Head of State Xi subjects hundreds of millions of people to a digital dictatorship and crushes Hong Kong’s democratic movement. In the rich in oil Venezuela Maduro destroys the economy and sends death squads to starving citizens. In Tanzania President Magufuli secured “re-election” by deceiving journalists and members of the opposition. It is in the United States of America if the incumbent, who lost a democratic election, refuses to admit his defeat and initiate the transfer of power: Donald Trump He denied Joe Biden’s team the access, information, and budget needed to prepare for office in January. Instead, he disparages the winners on Twitter, ranting about “election fraud,” even if there is no – literally: no valid evidence – and hissing that he would stay in office.

I wrote yesterday that Trump’s behavior was childish. But it is worse. It undermines trust in democracy and distances its supporters from the rule of law. “Donald Trump has declared war on the democracy of his country”, comments my colleague Patrick Diekmann. It looks martial, but you can see it this way. “He is taking an entire country hostage, blocking the important phase of transition to the next president”. According to a survey by the Morning Consult institute two weeks ago, just under 70% of Republican supporters had faith in the electoral system. Now it’s only a third. Trump’s poison works.

His calculation seems clear: The United States, where he just lost, is covering up lawsuits for not being able to submit an official final result by the December 8 deadline. Then the regional governments should decide instead of the votes on who ins “Electoral College” is sent to elect the future president of the United States. Since these states are largely ruled by Trump’s Republican Party, they could vote for Trump instead of the real winner, Biden. Whether it will actually come to this is debatable, but the possibility is open. It’s an autocratic textbook strategy. Putin, Xi or Magufuli would hardly do it any other way.

Trump’s latest coup fits this: Not only has he fired his defense minister, but now also the entire civilian leadership of the ministry and replaced them with lackeys. Observers speculate whether Trump is preparing a military coup: create chaos, instigate riots, send soldiers, impose an emergency and continue to rule. Then what the American historian would prove to be true Timothy Snyder he said just before the presidential election in the t-online interview: “Donald Trump will fight to the end “. It doesn’t have to go that far, in Washington and in warring states there are many intelligent and law-abiding patriots defending the rule of law. But the fact that it is necessary to warn against the scenario of a presidential coup shows the serious damage that Trump has already done. This man is a danger to democracy, not only in the United States, but around the world. With its arrogant demeanor, it provides power-hungry politicians with a model for how democratic processes can be undermined.

At the same time, he confronts the democratic public with a pathological problem: As a narcissist, he cannot lose. This raises the question of whether he should not be treated as a politician in full possession of his mental powers. But like a sick person. If patient Donald John Trump continues his campaign against democracy and refuses to leave the White House, it will be time to call an ambulance no later than January 20. Assistants should bring a straitjacket just in case.
