This heart is hard. A helicopter swirled over Boyle Heights Keck Hospital on Friday during an organ transport to Los Angeles and crashed on the rooftop landing pad. He stopped on one side on the edge: he would soon be missing and would have fallen from the multi-storey building onto the street.
On board the helicopter: the donor heart urgently needed by a patient.
Use with special tools
Alarmed rescuers had to open the helicopter wreck with special tools to get to the donor’s heart. The three people on board escaped without serious injuries, as reported by the KTLA 5 television station.
Rescuers managed to retrieve the organ from the wreck and deliver it to a hospital employee. As a video of the accident scene shows, the doctor immediately turned around and wanted to rush back to the hospital. But then the doctor tripped over the wreckage of the helicopter and dropped the heart.
“Incredible story”
The organ apparently did not suffer any damage: the hospital announced, according to the Los Angeles Times, that the heart would be transplanted. “This is truly an amazing story,” hospital spokeswoman Meg Aldrich said.
It is not yet known whether the operation was successful.
Doctors at the hospital said they felt a “slight, short jolt” from the helicopter crash. Although rubble fell on the road in the accident, no passer-by, patient or hospital employee was injured. Furthermore, there was no significant damage to the building. (noo)
