Not a single allegation of fraud that the president-elect’s team has so far publicly raised has been confirmed by a court. Not even in crucial Pennsylvania.
Judge Matthew Brann is a serious person and expects the people who perform in his courtroom to act seriously. So if, as Judge Bann wrote in a ruling Saturday, President Donald Trump’s attorneys really asked him to invalidate the Pennsylvania presidential election – and thus devalue the votes of nearly seven million voters – then “one should believe that. the plaintiffs advanced well armed with compelling legal arguments and solid evidence. ‘
But, as the judge said Brann, “it did not happen.” Instead, Trump’s representatives had only advanced “hair-raising arguments and speculative allegations”. Judge Brann ruled that the request to cancel the election results was rejected.
Well known model
This is now a familiar pattern: legal representatives from Trump or the Republican Party intend to sue in states where election results were halfway through. They claim in press conferences that they have indisputable evidence of all kinds of scams and irregularities that garnered a large number of votes for Democrat Joe Biden. In court, therefore, they ask that the electoral result not be “certified”, that is, not declared official.
The plan behind this strategy: If the election results are unofficial, then Biden’s victory is not officially established, perhaps state parliaments could determine the electoral men and women who will formally elect the president in December. Whether parliaments also have this supposed right to elect their state’s representatives in the constituency is controversial among lawyers, but Trump continues to follow this path nearly three weeks after the lost election.
Appeal against the Pennsylvania ruling
Trump’s problem with this is that the “evidence” produced by his lawyers doesn’t deserve the label. So far, no allegations of fraud made public by Trump’s allies have been confirmed in court. So judges from Arizona to Michigan to Pennsylvania dismissed the Trump camp lawsuits. The verdict in Pennsylvania was particularly painful for Trumpt: The state that Biden won with more than 80,000 votes has 20 votes in the constituency. If Trump fails to successfully contest his defeat there and Biden’s victory becomes official, the president-elect’s bizarre fight against this electoral is practically over.
The Trump’s lawyers then appealed against the judgment of Brann. You want to take the case to the Constitutional Court of the United States as soon as possible. They hope for more sympathy from the Supreme Court: six of the nine judges present belong to the conservative wing of the court. However, Federal District Judge Matthew Brann is also a Conservative and a Republican. Pat Toomey, the US Republican Senator from Pennsylvania, used Brann’s verdict as an opportunity to distance himself from Trump, one of the few Republican lawmakers to have done so.
Also in Georgia, the interior minister and the governor, both Republicans and Trump supporters, declared Friday’s election results official. Biden won there by 12,000 votes. Trump’s election team has called for a second recount of ballots, which – like the first – shouldn’t change the outcome.
Local politicians turn around
In Michigan, the responsible body will vote on certifying Biden’s election victory on Monday. Trump urged Republican parliamentary leaders at a White House meeting on Friday to ignore Biden’s lead of more than 150,000 votes and instead assign the state’s 16 votes to him, the underdog. The willingness of local politicians to help the president in this coup attempt was limited.
