The new balance of daily infections brings the total number of diseases in Italy to 1,107,303. Authorities have reported 550 disease deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 44,139, according to international media.

Against the backdrop of the increase in cases across the country, Italy has decided to impose a strict quarantine, starting Sunday, in two new regions: Campania and Tuscany. Local authorities in Campania, a region that includes the city of Naples, continue to sound the alarm, saying that the region’s hospitals are on the verge of collapse.

The Italian press advertised footage of shocking scenes from Naples hospitals. In a medical unit, doctors brought oxygen cylinders and other equipment to the hospital parking lot to treat the sick directly in the car because the emergency room was full.

“We have two to three weeks to make a decision on a total quarantine across the country,” said Walter Ricciardi, Rome’s top government advisor on the pandemic.

Italy has resumed the introduction of restrictions amid a dramatic increase in the number of cases in recent weeks, dividing regions into three risk categories. Campania and Tuscany therefore follow the regions of Lombardy, Bolzano, Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta and Calabria in imposing specific measures for the red risk category.

The imposition of new restrictions has led to violent protests, especially in Naples and surrounding areas.
