Israel: Benjamin Netanyahu’s government partner wants to vote for the dissolution of parliament

Defense Minister Benny Gantz’s Blue-White Alliance, who is part of Israel’s national unity government, wants to join an opposition motion to dissolve parliament. His party, which ruled in a coalition with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud, tomorrow “will vote for the dissolution of parliament,” Gantz announced in a televised speech Tuesday evening.

The move could lead to Israel’s fourth general election in two years. However, Wednesday’s vote is only a first phase. Two more Knesset readings would be needed before parliament can be dissolved.

There had recently been growing tensions within the ruling coalition. In Israel, before Netanyahu and Gantz agreed on a government alliance in April, there had been three parliamentary elections in one year. If the current ruling coalition of Netanyahu’s Likud and Gantz’s blue-white alliance is broken, the country faces another political crisis.
