Interpol, the global international police cooperation organization, warned Wednesday that organized crime networks could target newly developed vaccines against covid-19, also warning of the potential sale of fake vaccines.
Interpol, based in France, has issued an “orange” alert in all its 194 member countries, warning them to prepare for organized crime networks aimed at attacking vaccines, both physically and virtually, the agency said. Reuters.
“As governments prepare to roll out vaccines, criminal organizations are planning to infiltrate or disrupt supply chains. The official also said the pandemic triggered “unprecedented opportunistic criminal behavior” and warned of a new wave of criminal activity “in connection with counterfeiting, theft and illegal advertising of covid-19 vaccines.”
The international body also called for close coordination between health regulators and law enforcement authorities, as vaccines move closer to approval and distribution, to ensure supply chain security and to identify illegal sites that they sell counterfeit products.
“It is essential that the authorities are as prepared as possible for what will be a violent attack on all kinds of vaccine-related criminal activities,” he concluded.
