In a tweet, Tamil-born Dr. Celine said she kept her caste name, as “it’s part of my history and identity, even if part of that history is painful.”
Tamil Prime Minister Nadu Edappadi K Palaniswami and opposition party leader MK Stalin gathered Tuesday to congratulate and wish Indian-born epidemiologist in the United States Celine R. Gounder, who has Tamil roots. Celine, who is an assistant professor at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, has been named a member of US President-elect Joe Biden’s COVID-19 advisory board. Another South Indian who has joined the task force is Vivek Murthy, the former US surgeon general. His family was originally from Karnataka. This marks his return to health policy after being asked to step down from the Trump administration in 2017.
Congratulating both Celine and Karnataka origin Vivek Murthy, Prime Minister Edappadi Palaniswami wrote, “I am extremely happy that @celinegounder and @vivek_murthy have been named to the US National Pandemic Taskforce to fight # COVID19. proud India and I am very happy to learn that Dr. Celine Gounder has a Tamil heritage. Best wishes to you both. “

DMK leader MK Stalin wrote: “I am glad to know about the appointment of Celine Gounder to President-elect Joe Biden’s national pandemic task force to fight Covid-19. Glad to know about the appointment of a woman of Tamil origin. this crucial task force. “

Celine’s father, Raj Gounder, is from Tamil Nadu. She is an HIV / infectious disease specialist and internist, epidemiologist, journalist and director, as per her Linkedin page.
He received his BA in Molecular Biology from Princeton University, his Masters in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and his MD from the University of Washington. Celine was an intern and resident of Internal Medicine at Harvard Massachusetts General Hospital and a postdoctoral fellow in Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University. She was elected a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in 2016.
Recognizing and thanking the wishes sent to her by Tamil Nadu, Celine explained in a Twitter thread why she continues to keep her caste name as a surname. “My dad changed his name to Gounder in the early 1970s before I was born. My name is my name. It’s part of my history and my identity, even if part of that history is painful. Not. I changed my name when I got married. I’m not changing it now, “he wrote.
