How the North Korean gymnast defector managed to slip unnoticed past the sensor fence at the safe border between the two Koreas

South Korean media reported the rare escape of a North Korean man who jumped a three-meter high wire fence with sensors. The border area is almost impossible to cross, being manned by soldiers, equipped with motion sensors, surveillance cameras and mines.

The man was seen on cameras and captured by South Korean soldiers who followed in his footsteps. The authorities asked him to demonstrate how he jumped the fence to understand how he managed to get past it without being detected.

The South Korean chief of staff explained that the fault lay with the loose screws of the sensor systems installed in 2015. Inspection of the raised fence showed that it had been pressed, which should have activated the brass of the sensor.

The South Korean army will check all sensors on the side of the border.

About 1,000 North Koreans travel to South Korea each year to escape their country’s repressive regime, mainly through China. He does not dare to cross the border through the Demilitarized Zone.
