Julen, the two-year-old boy who fell into a well about 100 meters deep on January 13 in Malaga, Spain, is still missing.
Rescue operations have lasted since then and have gone through several phases. "We always work with the idea that Julen is alive," says Bernardo Moltó, spokesperson for the Spanish Guardia Civil.
"Hope is the last to die" and the proof of this is the Jessica McClure.
Just 18 months, "little Jessica", as she was known, fell into a hole in Texas, USA, in October 1987. After 58 hours, the girl was removed from the living scene. The rescue operations have been broadcast live all over the world.
Watch the video here:
The fall of the child
Jessica played with other children in her aunt's backyard, under the supervision of her mother, who was then seventeen. The house phone rang and the mother came in to answer. A few seconds later she was alerted by the screams of the children who said that Jessica had fallen through a hole, a well only 20 centimeters in diameter.
When they arrived at the scene, the authorities believed that the rescue would be carried out in a short time. Which in the end did not turn out. The earth's constitution eventually made the operations difficult. Jessica was surrounded by stones, not from the earth, as originally thought.
There was no sound on the surface and the worst was dreaded. The excavation of a parallel hole proved to be essential for the success of this rescue. When it was ready and the bridge was started for the first, where the baby was, there were moans. Rescue teams redoubled their efforts.
58 hours after the fall, the paramedic appears on the surface with Jessica in her lap, alive. She was covered in mud, dehydrated and had an infection in her foot, which forced her to undergo 15 surgeries and lose one of her toes due to gangrene.
National hero committed suicide
The paramedic Robert O & # 39; Donnell he became a national hero when he managed to make the girl survive. With the proportions and the mediator that the case has achieved, Robert will have been left with post-traumatic stress. In 1995, eight years after the rescue, the doctor eventually committed suicide.
The New York Times reported the death of the doctor and states that the leap of fame and anonymity that returned, in a short time, proved to be fatal.
"The whole world has looked and been for a time the center, not only of its small universe, but also of the real and known universe. It was a parade, numerous television appearances, a letter from the president, a vice president's handshake and a television film, but the rooms were gone, the world's attention changed and he was left alone. "
"It was the best time in Robert's life and the worst thing that happened to him," his mother told the New York Times at the time.
O & # 39; Donnell was not the only one who could not cope with the situation. According to the same publication, other people who contributed to the rescue did not know how to manage the exposure and ended up falling into alcoholism, problems with the law and divorce.
$ 1 million for Jessica
The televisions followed and forwarded the case live to everyone. Moved by history, several people began to donate money to the child's family. In all, they raised $ 1 million, to which Jessica only had access when she turned 25.
The family even received a phone call from the then president of the United States, Ronald Reaganand the visit to the US Vice President's hospital at the time, George H. W. Bushand his wife
The Rescue Movie
The story of "baby Jessica" remains until today. In 1989 she was featured in ABC's "Everybody & # 39; s Baby: The Rescue" by Jessica McClure. Even the Indian film "Malootty", 1990, was based on the incident. Also the rescue images were used in the video clip of Michael Jackson, "Man In The Mirror" and in the movie "V of Revenge".
Currently Jessica is 32 and an elementary school assistant in Midland, Texas. She is married and has two children. With the money he received from the donations at the time of the ransom, Jessica bought the house where she now lives with her family.
