Masses of water on the streets, at least two deaths and a collapsed bridge: a storm caused serious damage to the Italian Mediterranean island of Sardinia. According to firefighters, two people died, one of them 90, in a mud-covered house. The Ansa news agency reported even three deaths.

According to firefighters, a bridge collapsed near the town of Bitti. Rescuers counted a total of over 150 missions. The search for missing persons continues. The civil protection authority has warned residents not to leave their homes as the water level could change very quickly.

Possible more intense rains

According to the authorities, the island of Sicily and the regions of Calabria at the tip of the Italian boot, as well as Basilicata, are also affected by the storm, but to a lesser extent. The weather front had shifted from southern Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula. Even over the weekend, people have to expect severe storms.

Last weekend, heavy rains in the same region flooded places and flooded country roads. The flood situation in the area around the town of Crotone in Calabria was particularly dramatic. There helpers with inflatable boats and amphibious vehicles were used to free people trapped in cars and houses from the water. The firefighters spoke of 200 rescue operations. There were no injuries.
