A Cuban court sentenced to life imprisonment a young man who killed a policeman and injured two others, one of whom seriously, last June, the official media reported last Thursday.

The court found the attacker guilty: Y. Thrown – of the crimes of murder, attempted murder, violent robbery, illegal possession and possession of weapons, theft and damage and imprisoned for life “considering the extraordinary gravity” of the events says a note from the state newspaper Granma.

After the defendant’s appeal, the Supreme People’s Court of the Caribbean country upheld the sentence “deeming it correct”.

The Cuban penal code maintains the death penalty in force, even if a de facto moratorium has been in force since 2003, commuting it to prison sentences.

Another accused, whose participation in the facts “did not have the relevance of the precedent”, was sentenced to one year in prison for the crimes of illegal possession of weapons and failure to comply with the reporting obligation.

The event took place last June in a Havana police station, when the attacker, with “terrible social behavior and a criminal record” according to the official statement, attacked three policemen with a knife and stole a regulatory revolver.

One of the officers died of serious neck injuries and another, the driver of a patrol car, was reported in a serious life-threatening condition.

The Ministry of the Interior of the island therefore assured that the accused acted “individually” and specified that he was a former prisoner convicted of an assault crime, without employment, with a criminal record for robbery, injuries, possession of drugs, property damage and reception.

In Cuba there are strong laws against the possession of weapons and red news is not usual in the official media, which does not publish information on acts of blood, rape and other violent crimes.

It is the second time in less than fifteen days that the Cuban press has reported life imprisonment. On November 14 it was revealed that a pedophile who raped an 8-year-old girl in Santiago de Cuba (east) was sentenced to life in prison “as an alternative to the death penalty”.
