Shelves with toilet paper are emptying again, amid restrictions adopted by US authorities, from California to New York, causing shoppers to rush for essential goods, Reuters reports, according to Mediafax.

Walmart said it sees below-average availability of toilet paper and cleaning products in some communities.

As of Friday afternoon, 22 states had imposed restrictions aimed at reducing the spread of the virus, giving rise to a new rush of panic buying and merchant adoption of slimming products.

Shoppers in half a dozen U.S. cities told Reuters that sanitary pads are no longer available at retailers such as Walmart and Costco, as well as Albertsons and Vons food chains owned by Cerberus Capital.

“Walmarts no longer has the Lysol wipes and the toilet paper is gone again,” said Whitley Hatcher, 31, of Tucson, Arizona.

“Oddly, in places like Walgreens and Dollar Tree you can find what you need. I think people see empty shelves in department stores and panic,” Hatcher said.

In a Costco in Vancouver, Washington, there are no more toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning wipes, gloves and canned meat.

The hunt for toilet paper is repeated in California, where the governor ordered restrictive measures in most of the state on Thursday.

Shoppers said toilet paper is no longer available at Costco stores in Fresno and Los Angeles.

Procter & Gamble, Seller No. 1 US toilet paper, said factories work 24/7 to meet demand.
