The first temporary approval for a corona vaccine has arrived. The German company Biontech and the US pharmaceutical company Pfizer can use their vaccine in the UK in emergency situations on affected patients.
“For the first time, people who did not participate as test subjects in the development of vaccination can be vaccinated against Covid-19,” says Biontech co-founder and CEO Ugur Sahin (55), in a press release of the company.
Several candidates in the running: Do I have to get vaccinated with two vaccines at the same time?(00:46)
40 million cans reserved
Britain had already pre-booked 40 million doses of the vaccine from the pharmaceutical duo. Some of them should already be released this year. Switzerland also has an agreement with the companies: the federal government would have reserved three million doses of the possible vaccine from Pfizer / Biontech.
The companies recently said their vaccine was effective in protecting over 90% of those who have been vaccinated against the corona. The Swissmedic authority is also working on the approval in Switzerland. It can take up to three months before it is available. They are still waiting for the final dates, it was said at the beginning of November.
Other important candidates currently at the forefront of the vaccine race: the US biotech group Moderna, which will produce in Lonza, and the British company Astra Zeneca.
